While many patriots revere the Communist soldiers who defended their nation from foreign invasion, and while the National Liberation Front occasionally brutalizes those who question their Democratic government, the depiction of the war in such movies is not as complex as in a more thoughtful movie like The Bridge Over the River Kwai. Though the movie's title implies that it is about the struggle for democracy in a developing country, it is actually about a struggle in the most civilized country in the world during the period in which it was destroyed by World War II. Certainly, the Communists carried out one of the most ruthless campaigns of political repression at the time, but the vast majority of the country supported the national government in its fight against the Japanese occupiers, and the subsequent U.S. attempts at subverting or at least neutralizing the Communist movement. I came to this movie expecting to see good action, and, while there was plenty of it, the story was much more interesting than the rest of the movie. Sure, the story deals with one of the most unsavory moments in Korean history, the collusion between the Japanese and the Nationalists in their attempts to destroy the country in order to maintain their stranglehold occupation of the Korean Peninsula, but if you want a better understanding of how the war came about, you may want to consider reading up on the international situation at the time.
